She is also called Santeri on the colloquial front. According to the mythological beliefs, there was a battle between Vishnu and Shiva. The fierce battle gave rise to Brahma who prayed to Goddess Parvati to appear. Upon appearing in the battlefield, Parvati presented herself in the form of Shantadurga. Right upon taking this avatar, Shantadurga took Shiva on her left hand and Vishnu on her right! This concluded in settling the fight. Representing Shiva and Vishnu, Shantadurga holds two serpents.

About the Temple

The original temple was located at Quelossim which got destroyed in the year 1566 by the Portuguese. Then, the goddess got shifted to Kavalem. The spot where the original temple stood at Keloshi or Quelossim is referred to as Deoolbhata. The present-day location was constructed during the Maratha ruler’s reign in 1738 A.!

Interior of the Temple

The interior of the temple has a complex is on the foothills’ slope of the mountain chain! This is surrounded by the lush vegetation! The main temple along with three small temples of the deities is built on the temple’s three sides! The temple comprises the pyramidal roofs’ collection that also features a dome as well.
