Sagar Island – Why You Need To Visit The Beaches Here!

All of us like going to beaches but going to beaches comes with a little opportunity cost. The opportunity cost is that we cannot expect peace or relaxation at the beach due to overcrowding. In West Bengal, people prefer going to Digha or Mandarmani but they always complain about the cleanliness and the overcrowding. In this article, I would be telling you about a place in West Bengal where you could enjoy the beach and at the same time expect peace and relaxation. The place I am talking about is Sagar Island, here is everything you need to know about this place.

Sagar Island – Why You Need To Visit The Beaches Here!

About the place

Sagar Island is one of the most beautiful places in West Bengal. Located at a distance of about 150 kilometres of Kolkata, this place is located far away from the city life which would help you get peace and relaxation which cannot be expected to get in the city. The place is spread across over 200 kilometres and it holds a lot of religious significance. Imagine going to a place which has a clear sky, clear sky and you sitting on a pile of sand wouldn’t that give you serenity? This is the kind of experience Sagar Island has to offer to you.

How to reach this place?

The best part about Sagar Island is that it is well connected by road, rail and air. If you are coming here via railways then you need to book your tickets for Chitpur Railway Station. From here Sagar Island is situated at a distance of around 128 kilometres. You could also book your tickets for Howrah Station in case tickets are not available for Chitpur Railway Station. Before you come to this place, make sure you make travel arrangements because hiring a car directly for Sagar Island is not possible from both the stations. If you plan on taking a bus, then you would need to come to Esplanade or Karunamoyee, from these places you would easily get a bus for Sagar Island.

If you are coming via airways then you would need to book your tickets for Kolkata airport, from here the island is located at a distance of 120 kilometres. Direct cars and buses are not available from the airport as well, you would need to travel to Esplanade for the same.

Taking a road trip to reach this place is the best possible option. The road to Sagar Island is more like taking an adventure and it is really thrilling. Go to Esplanade, you would easily get a bus for Harwood point from here. When you reach the point, you would need to take a boat ride which would take you to Kachuberia and from here you would find a bus which would drop you at Sagar Island. The bus ride shouldn’t take more than an hour.

Best time to visit

When it comes to the best time to visit this Island, different seasons have different advantages. If you are visiting this place during summers then you can expect the weather to be warm and humid but you would be able to enjoy the water sports available at this place. I would advise you not to visit this place during the monsoons because this place receives heavy rainfall due to which most transportation facilities are closed to and from Sagar Island. However, it is said that the place looks incredibly beautiful during this time. The best months for visiting this place would be from August – February, during this time the weather is neither too hot or cold and you can explore the place around without any issues. Makar Sankranti is a festival which is celebrated here in the month of January, try to reach this place during this time – it is really a wonderful experience.

Now we come down to the million-dollar query. What can I expect from this place? Don’t worry Sagar Island has a lot in stores for you. There are limited places here but they are good enough to keep you occupied. Here are the top 3 places:

1. Frazerganj

The first place which comes to my mind is Frazerganj. This place has a twin town which is known as Bakkhali which is situated at a distance of 2 kilometres from this place. If you plan on visiting here, you can take direct buses to this place from Kolkata. Andrew Fraser was a British officer and during the 1900s he tried to build a resort in this area. However, he was unsuccessful in this attempt as the waves washed away the construction. This place has been named after him; the ruins of his office is still present at the location. The beach at this place one of the most isolated beaches you would ever come across in your life. I remember I visited this beach at around 4 pm and apart from 10-12 people there was nobody present at the beach. You would be coming across a lot of red crabs at this beach so make sure you watch your step. There are no water sport activities present here so don’t keep expectations regarding the same. If you have been looking for a beach where you can sit quietly alone or with your loved enjoy looking at the sunset this is the perfect place for you.

2. Bakkhali Beach

Another place which has managed to maintain its beauty amidst the pollution and human interference with nature is this particular beach. It is one of the best places to enjoy the sunrise and sunset. Nearby the beach there is a temple which you cannot afford to miss out on. Generally, the beaches in West Bengal are considered to be very unhygienic because people litter a lot. However, this beach is not like others and it is really well maintained.

3. Sagardwip Beach

The last place that I would like to mention in this article is Sagardwip Beach. Nearby, the beach is Kapil Muni Temple which is a must visit. Take your loved one and walk around the beach, trust me the winds and waves would really win your heart. The beach is considered to be pretty safe so make sure you carry additional clothes and take a dip in the water.

Sagar Island is still yet to be polluted and commercialized therefore visit this place as soon as possible before it loses its charm due to both of these things. This beautiful island does not have many places for sightseeing but the limited ones are good enough to cherish you up for the weekend. If you have been looking for a beach where you could avoid city life, crowd and just sit and relax then Sagar Island is the perfect place for you. So, what are you waiting for? Pack your bags and leave for Sagar Island right now!
