Whenever we talk about places for vacations we always tend to think about the places in north India or the Deccan. It is natural for all of us to think about these places since they are highly advertised and more known to people. However, one direction of this country remains to be a little undervalued and that is the north-east. In this article, I would be talking about a city in the state of Mizoram. The name of the city is Aizawl which happens to be the capital of the state. Not only is this state beautiful but also has a lot of history related to it which makes it more fascinating and interesting. 1. About the place

It is one of the eight states of northeast India. It is located at a height of 1132 feet above mean sea level and you can witness the beauty of the Tlawng river flowing near the city. It is the fastest growing city in the state and most of their cultural practices are regarding harvesting and agriculture. The word “Mizoram” has been derived from the term “Mizos” which means highlanders. Mizoram is one of the smallest states in India and shares international borders which many countries. Before becoming a state in 1987 it was a union territory. The residents here are referred to as Mizos and they are of Mongolian origin.

2. How to reach this place?


Aizawl is well connected by road, rail and air. If you are coming here via airways then the nearest airport from this place would be Lengpui Airport. From the airport, your destination is located at about a distance of 40 kilometres. If you are coming here via railways then you would need to go to Silchar which is located at a distance of almost 200 kilometres. From Silchar, you can get state buses or even rent private cabs. If you are coming here via road then you would need to get to NH 54, the highway passes through Silchar and connects Aizawal with Guwahati and Shillong. According to me the best way to get to your destination would be to come here via airways. Flights run daily from Kolkata and Guwahati and they are very economical. Moreover, from the airport, it is just 40 kilometres away while if you come via railways you would need to travel almost 200 kilometres via road.

3. Best time to visit

The best part about Aizawl is that it experiences a moderate climate throughout the year. The temperature ranges from 19-28 during the summer and during the winters it can get as low as 5 degrees. Don’t visit Aizawl during the monsoon season because there this region receives a lot of rainfall. The best time to visit this place would be from October – March.

4. Best Places To Visit

Aizawl is full of tourist places. There are so many places in this city that visiting all of them in a short span would be a challenge for you. I will try to narrow it down to the top 7 places:

a) Tamdil Lake

The first place that I would like to talk about is the Tamdil lake which is the largest lake in the state. It is located at a distance of around 110 kilometres from Aizawal but the road trip is worth rooting for. When you get here you can enjoy the boating facilities and you would also come across Leptolalax which is a rare species of frogs. The view from the place is simply amazing and the water is as clear as a crystal.

b) KV Paradise

Do you like romantic stories? If yes then you would surely want to go to this place. KV stands for Khwalthring Varte. Khawlhring lost his wife Varte in a car accident in 2001 due to which he spends his entire savings in constructing of this modern Taj Mahal. It is situated in the outskirts of the city and it looks really beautiful.

c) Khawnglung Wildlife Sanctuary

This is one of the places which you cannot afford to miss out on. It is located at a distance of about 180 kilometres from Aizawal. The distance may be a little too much but if you like road trips then you are going to love this one. You can expect to see numerous birds, gibbon, serrow, sambar, barking deer and tiger. It also has leopards, rhinoceroses and gaur in huge numbers. If you are an animal lover then this place would really win your heart. The locals take really good care of this place as the region produces various herbs which are required in the preparation of many medicines.

d) Durtlang Hills

After going to the above mentioned 3 places you would surely like a place where you could capture the panoramic view of the city. Durtlang hills are the perfect place to get a panoramic shot. If you are interested in trekking then this is the perfect place for you. Since it is a very high hill the trek isn’t easy which adds up the spice of your adventure. It is one of the most popular tourist attractions and visited by people in huge numbers.

e) Vantawng Falls

The 5th place that I would like to talk about is the Vantawng Falls which is located at a distance of around 137 kilometres from Aizawl. It is a very popular waterfall in the region and the 13th highest waterfall in our country situated at a height of 750 feet above mean sea level. Though this place is a little far from the city but trust me you won’t regret the road trip once you reach this place.

f) Hmuifang

The last place I would like to talk about is Hmuifang. When you come to this place you would notice the rocky hills which provide a magnificent view of the city. It is a very popular trekking destination and people from all across the country come to try the trek. Though the trek is considered to be a little difficult but once you manage to reach the top, the view would make your exhaustion go away. There are many lodges nearby this area like Orchid Hotel, Ritz Hotel and Mayur Hotel where you can crash for the night.

While planning a vacation people tend to forget about the north-east which shouldn’t happen. It has many beautiful places which one can consider of visiting.
