This place shares its borders with Bangladesh and is one of the few places India where you can find get to see monuments which belong to the time before British captured India. The entire city is divided into 5 sections and holds many popular attractions which have resulted in this place becoming popular in Bengal.

How to reach the place


Cooch Behar is well connected by road, rail and air. If you are coming here by air then you would need to go to Bagdogra airport as the city doesn’t have an airport of its own. From the airport, you can rent a private car which would take you to Cooch Behar. If you are coming here via railways then the best possible option would be to come to Kolkata first. From, Kolkata you will get numerous trains which go to this place. If you are planning to come here via roadways then it might be a little tedious because there are no direct buses available for this route. You would need to take a bus to Malda and from here you will need to take the train to Cooch Behar. The best way to reach this place would be via railways which takes nearly 12 hours from Kolkata.

Best time to visit

Different seasons bring different advantages and disadvantages. Cooch Behar is one of the places in India where the climate remains moderate throughout the year. If you are coming here in summer, then you can expect a lot of humidity and its kind of makes it difficult to explore the place because the humidity causes a lot of exhaustion. If you are coming here during the monsoon season then the rain could prove to be a problem but it is during this season that Rath Yatra happens so it has a lot of tourist attraction during this season. If you are planning to come here during winter then you can enjoy festivals like Ras Mela. The temperature during winter remains very pleasant so you can easily explore the place without exhaustion.

Best places to visit

There are numerous places which you can think of visiting when you come to Cooch Behar. Visiting all of them may not be possible for you, so I will tell you about the top 5 places in the area.

1. Cooch Behar Rajbari

If you come to this place and ask anyone about the most famous attraction in the city, they would surely name “Cooch Behar Rajbari”. This place was built by Nripendra (A Bengali ruler) in the 1880s. The palace has been turned into a museum and you can see various artefacts like utensils, swords, rifles, utensils and old clothes. The palace covers a huge area and the garden surrounding the palace is well maintained.

2. Baneswar Shiva Temple

The second place which comes to my mind when I am talking about the best places to visit in Cooch Behar is Baneswar Shiva Temple. If you are coming to Cooch Behar especially for this temple then it is highly advised to visit it during the month of Saavan. The temple is located at a distance of about 15 kilometres from Cooch Behar and is easily accessible. The major attraction near the temple is “Mohan” which houses turtles. There is also an interesting tradition in this temple, the pujaris here don’t leave the temple without taking a bath in the lake here.

3. Sagar Dighi

After you complete visiting all your tourist spots come to this place. This place is the perfect place of taking an evening walk and enjoy the sunset. The place is very well maintained and a large pond surrounds the area. If you walk near the place you would be coming across a lot of small eateries which serve really good food. The place is also famous for bird watching, so if you are interested in this make sure you carry your camera to take good pictures.

4. Madan Mohan Temple

The 4th place which comes to my mind is Madan Mohan Temple. This temple is very popular in the city and was built by the royal family of Cooch Behar. If you want to click photographs at this temple you would need to pay a nominal fee of Rs. 25. It is maintained by the district administration and they have really done a commendable job. The temple is organized and on most of the days, you won’t come across a large crowd. If you are coming to Cooch Behar especially for seeing this temple then plan to come during the Rash Festival.

5. Gosanimari Rajput

The last place I would like to talk about is Gosanimari Rajput. This place was discovered a few years ago. If you are a person who loves history then you cannot think of a better place than this. When you come to this place you would notice the stone engravings and structures like water supply systems. It really makes you wonder about the intelligent architecture of that time. It is located at a distance of about 40 kilometres from the city of Cooch Behar and represents the Khem Dynasty. You will get to learn a lot about the “Pal Dynasty” of Bengal when you visit this place.
