Cold yet beautiful, the night was indeed a remarkable night at Secretariat, latterly known as the Writers’ Building. While everyone was enjoying the party that night, the daredevil Chittagong Uprising echoed its own shares of secrets. Then, Subhas Chandra Bose had only established the network of his revolutionaries.
The night appeared with three young men dressed nicely in ironed European costumes. It was a time for European a few of the Indian people also got their own share of enjoyment, provided they kept all their duties towards the British!
Coming back to the three young men, they didn’t disappoint India that day! What they did is just walked up straight to the gathering and inquired about Calcutta Police’s Inspector General – Colonel N.S. Simpson. Soon after they spotted this man, one of those three men greeted him and all of a sudden was seen whipping out the 1920 Luger pistol and shooting him dead! The remarkable Writers’ Building attack did send ripples of terror to the British circles of politics.
An Introduction to Secretariat, Latterly Familiar as Writers’ Building
With the Writers’ Building attack, it forced the Bengal Volunteers in developing a successful evolutionary organization. As every freedom act was partially responsible for India’s independence, this attack wasn’t anything exceptional.
To give a fair introduction to Kolkata’s Writers’, it happens to be the secretariat building of State Government of Bengal. It was designed in the year 1777 by Thomas Lyon for East India Company. Later on, in the year 1821, a total of 128 ft-long verandahs was built alongside Ionic columns, each of which was a total of 32 ft high. These were included right on first as well as second floors! Right between the years 1889 and 1906, there were a total of two new blocks which were again added and it got approached by the iron staircases.
