The Fernhills Royal Palace Hotel located amidst the beautiful Nilgiri hills in Ooty in the state of Tamil Nadu, is said to be a haunted place and there are testimonials about it from some famous Bollywood Celebs.
History of the Fernhills Royal Palace
The palace was built in 1844, originally as a summer residence for the Maharaja of Mysore. The palace is located in the property spread over 50 acres of land, surrounded by lush green plantations of tea and eucalyptus trees. The Fernhills Royal Palace’s design looks like that of a Swiss Cottage. The ownership of the palace had changed in period of 1860s, when it was named Moonesami for a brief time and was one of earliest country club in Ooty. During the British Rule, Ooty was a famous hill station and the palace was one of the favourite place to stay for the British. The Fernhills Royal Palace, then became quite popular with honeymooners and holidaymakers, who wanted to enjoy the beauty of the serene hills of Ooty in a colonial style hotel.
Spooky incidents at the Fernhills Royal Palace
Since, the palace has a very eerie and old times look, it attracted some cinema producers as well. There were already rumours about the palace being haunted, but there were no popular real experience stories about it. While shooting for a film in Ooty, the famous Bollywood dance choreographer Saroj Khan and her troupe had stayed in the hotel. At night they were woken up by screeching noises of furniture moving on the upper floor. It disturbed Saroj Khan and her dancers’ sleep and they complained about it to the manager next morning. This is when the receptionist pointed out that there is no upper floor in the hotel! Saroj Khan was quite spooked and she has shared this story with many others in Bollywood. Bipasha Basu, who shot some part of the film Raaz at the Fernhills Royal Palace had heard Saroj’s story and had been quite spooked working there. In fact, the hotel was shut down for some time and it is claimed that it was because of the haunting.
Whether the haunting at the Fernhills Royal Palace is for real or not, the hotel is sure a must visit experience place with its beautiful Swiss style architecture and of course the surrounding beauty of the Nilgiri Hills.
