The iconic Taj Mahal Palace Hotel of Mumbai, is said to be one of the haunted hotels in the country. The majestic hotel which has hosted many famous people like Barack Obama, Oprah Winfrey, Bill Clinton, The Beatles, Roger Moore, Brad Pitt among many, also seems to be hosting a permanent ghost. It is believed that W.A. Chambers, the chief architect for the hotel building, is haunting the corridors of the regal building.
Story behind Taj Mahal Palace Hotel haunting
The luxurious 5 star – Taj Mahal Palace Hotel was commissioned to be built by industrialist Jamshedji Tata, famously after he was denied entry to the then famous hotel Watson. Tata felt insulted because of the racist attitude of the British and vouched to build an even grander hotel for Indians. This is when he had hired few Indian architects. But when the chief Indian architect Khanderoa Vaidya died, Englishman W.A. Chambers was hired. Chambers had made the blueprint of the hotel and left for a vacation. When he returned from his holidays in 1903, the hotel’s construction was almost complete. But as per rumours, the front portion was built in the opposite direction then intended by him and the sea was on the building’s backside. Apparently this mistake distressed the perfectionist Chambers so much that he committed suicide by jumping from the 5th floor of the hotel. And since then it is believed that the spirit of Chambers is haunting the Taj Mahal Palace.
Spooky experiences at the Taj Mahal Palace
If stories doing the rounds amongst the hotel’s staff are to be believed, then Chamber’s ghost still meanders around in the old wing of the hotel. Some have claimed to have seen apparitions, while some have heard weeping noise. Though the spirit has never harmed anyone, its presence has been felt, claim some staff and even guests.
The hotel might not have been built as planned by the architect, whose spirit still seems to be ghosting around in disappointment. But the fact that the Taj Mahal Palace is the finest and the best luxurious hotel in India, should sure bring some cheers to the spirit.
