Samsing is located at an altitude of 3000 metres and is one of the most beautiful places you would ever come across. It is located at the foothills of the Himalayas and is a perfect place if you are looking for a place where you could get peace and serenity. If you visit certain places in this region you would notice the snow-covered mountains on one side and greenery on the other. The view is so magnificent is that it would make you feel like you are in some kind of paradise.

How to reach the place

Samsing is well connected by road, rail and air. It is located at a distance of nearly 90 kilometres from Siliguri. If you take my advice come here via road. The road to this place is so amazing and you would be coming across so many beautiful sights that it would really win your heart. If you are coming here via railways then you would need to book your ticket to Siliguri railway station and from here you can rent a cab which would drop you at this location. If you are coming by air then you would need to go to Bagdogra which is located at about 20 kilometres from Siliguri. As I said, the road trip is the best option to reach Samsing. Buses and rentable cars are available in huge numbers from the railway station and airport.

Samsing is one of the rare places in India which manages to maintain its beauty throughout the year. If you are visiting this place in summer then make sure you carry your raincoats because this place remains chilly and is accompanied by rainfall. In the winter the temperature drops to a great extent giving rise to chilly winds so make sure you carry good woollen clothes. The best time to visit this place is from October-March because during this time this place remains cool and at the same time you can witness the green belt surrounding this place. It really looks beautiful.

Best places to visit

If you know how to drive, I would suggest you hire a car and drive on your own. The reason why I have suggested is that Samsing is still an unexplored place and there are certain places which very few people know about. Having a personal vehicle would help you to explore the place properly. It would also help you pass through the forests, streams, tea gardens and witness the great landscape of this particular place. As it located at the foothills of the Himalayas, you can expect to have great sightseeing. When you visit this place make sure you sit near the River Murti, close your eyes and listen to the sound of the flowing water it would really calm your mind and senses.

1. Suntalekhola

The first place I would like to talk about is Suntalekhola. It is situated at a distance of 5 kilometres from Samsing and is one of the most popular attractions in the area. It is regarded as a perfect place if you want to have a view of the Himalayas. When you visit this place and look around the hills, I am sure you would feel like to trek. When you trek here, you would be crossing mountain streams, rivers and valleys trust me you cannot hope for a better trekking experience than this. You would have to stay in the home of the locals here which makes it even more interesting. The locals rent you a room for a very economical price and it has all the basic facilities required.

2. Birdwatching in Dooars

As I said in the beginning that this place is still unexplored and due to this very limited interference takes places between human beings and nature. Since this place is relatively very silent as compared to other places this has become more like habitat for animals and birds. If you like bird watching then you cannot hope for a better place than this. It is home to numerous exotic and migratory birds which makes it exceptionally beautiful to watch. Make sure you carry your camera or charge your phone properly because you would definitely want to take photos here. Even if you are not interested in birds, make sure you come to this place. Just find a secluded spot, close your eyes and listen to the sound of the chirpy birds trust me you would like as if you are in paradise. You can expect to see leafbird, drongo, oriole, bulbul, forktail and minivets.

3. Rocky Island

If you are coming to this place you need to camp here. This place is more like a tourist resort located near River Murti. Take the tented accommodations available here and spend a few hours just staring at nature. It is a 20-minute drive from Santhalikhola and you would find a large stream which looks like a waterfall but it really isn’t. The place is surrounded by mountains and greenery on all sides and it really looks beautiful.

This place is a small village and there are not many options available for sightseeing. The only adventure sport which is available for undertaking here is Trekking. If you have been looking for a place to sit back and relax or to just take a break from the crowded and exhausting city life trust me Samsing is the perfect place for you. Though it is a village, the beautiful and unadulterated nature would really win your heart and you wouldn’t want to leave this place ever. So, what are you waiting for pack your bags and leave for Samsing right now!
