About the place

Have you ever felt like travelling on a time machine to see how India looked like in the 15th century? If yes, then this is the place where you can hope to find such kind of experience. This place has an enormous history and has monuments which date back to the 15th and 16th century. It is said that this place was founded by Rudra Pratap who was a Bundela Rajput. 2 things you would be found in huge numbers are palaces and temples. It also has a huge significance of Indian Mythology and the strong influence of the Mughal empire.

How to reach the place

Orchha is well connected by air, road and rail. If you are coming here via the mode of railways then you would need to book your ticket to Jhansi railway station which is located at a distance of about 20 kilometres. This railway station is well connected with major cities like Mumbai and Delhi so you wouldn’t be facing any problem finding trains on this route. If you are coming here via roadways then you would find numerous state buses for this route, you can even rent a private cab if you want privacy. If you are coming here via airways then the nearest airport is Gwalior which is located at a distance of 140 kilometres. From the airport, you can either rent a private car or take the state buses. I would suggest that you come here via railways because it leads to less exhaustion and harassment than the other 2 options.

Every season comes with its own set of advantages and disadvantages. The best months to visit this place are from November – February. During this time the climate is perfect for sightseeing as well as for opting for other activities. If you are planning to come here during the monsoons then be prepared to face problems on the road because this place receives heavy rainfall. however, it is said Orchha looks the best during the rainy season. I would suggest you avoid coming here during the summer because it becomes really hot and you wouldn’t feel like exploring the place.

Best places to visit and activities

Generally, places which are rich in history or have a lot of religious value become a little boring because you only have temples and forts for sightseeing. People intend to get bored due to lack of other activities and the monotonous travelogue. However, this is not in the case of Orchha. This place has numerous activities which would keep you occupied and entertained. Below I have mentioned the top places for sightseeing and the activities you can think of doing when you get here

1. River Rafting

If you are making an effort to come to Orccha. The first thing you need to do is to go to the Betwa river and try the river rafting. If you have been looking for a place to try adventure sports, trust me the experience just cannot get any better. The river has a lot of energy which makes the experience really amazing and exciting.

2. Kayaking

Many people in India do not know about this sport. Actually, a Kayak is more like a boat which has the capacity of accommodating only 1 person and is used to move across the water. This is a unique adventure sport which Orchha has to offer to you. When you take a ride in these Kayal you would be coming across the monument of chattris, historical monuments and a natural reserve which has numerous exotic and rare bird species.

3. Raja Ram Temple

Now let’s talk a little about sightseeing in this area. The first place which comes to my mind when I am talking the best places to visit in Orchha is Raja Ram Temple. The reason why I have mentioned this right at the very beginning is due to the historical and religious significance it has. The history of this temple is not entirely known however if you go and sit on the banks of the river nearby you will hear the locals and travel guides talking about this temple. If you are interested in history then you would really enjoy the knowledge they share about the temple. This is the only temple where Lord Ram is worshipped as a God as well as the king of the palace. The architecture of the temple is also very interesting because it is a blend of Nagara and Dravida architecture. The temple becomes immensely crowded during certain times of the year to ensure that you check the festival dates in the calendar before you leave for this place.

4. Orchha Fort

The last place that I would like to talk about is the Orchha Fort. This is again an architectural marvel which is the home to a few palaces and temples. When you visit this fort, you would not just get to see 1, not 2 but 3 architectural marvels. The Jahangir Mahal is one of the most important tourist attractions in Orchha and offers an amazing view from its balconies. The other 2 structures are Raj Mahal and Praveen Mahal which are equally magnificent. One thing astonishing about this fort is that even though this place was the main seat of Bundela kings it has seen very few battles. The fort is really well maintained and as managed to maintain its beauty despite all the pollution and modernization.
