Onam is the harvest festival of Kerala marking the beginning of the first month of the Malayalam calendar. It is celebrated as a welcome to King Mahabali who is believed, as the legend goes, to visit his land annually.

With celebration lasting around 10 days, the Kerala harvest festival is marked by a nine course meal served on banana leaves.

People in Kerala watch with religious fervour, the annual Snake Boat race also called Vallamkali.
