For those who love the scenic view of rivers flowing and twisting in high mountains then Naggar valley is perfect for them. Located in Kullu district of the state of Himachal Pradesh, this small town lies at an altitude of 1800 meters alongside the bank of Beas river. A town which is not only appealing for its natural beauty but also is interesting due to its rich cultural background.
Naggar valley was the capital for about 1400 years of Kullu Rajas till the capital was shifted to Kullu by Raja Jagat Singh. The main attraction of this place, Naggar Castle was built approximately 500 years ago by Raja Sidh Singh. The local legendary tale tells about how a human chain was formed across the river Beas to carry the stones from Gardhak Palace for constructing the castle. This beautiful castle made up of stones and wood is now a heritage hotel and offers a fantastic luxurious stay in the mountain lap and with amazes with the views of the Kullu valley. The castle also is said to be equipped with technologies to withstand an earthquake as it survived the one of 1905. Although most houses of nearby cities were completely destroyed yet Naggar Castle stood tall.
The castle turned hotel is operated by Himachal Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation.
Apart from the castle, there are quite a few attractions in Naggar. Most significant ones is the Roerich Estate.it is the duplex of famous Russian painter, philosopher Nicholas Roerich who settled in this place at the beginning of 20th century. The Roerich Estate is now a museum which mostly displays the paintings of this great artist.
Other nearby attraction includes Gauri Shankar temple, Vasuki Nag temple and Tripura Sundari temple.
Best time to visit:
Naggar has a pleasant climate all around the year with an average temperature of about 16-degree Celsius. Hence, the place is enjoyable throughout the year. However, winters may experience deep temperature drop sometimes.
How to reach:
Just 22 km from Manali, Naggar is well connected to major cities. Bhunter airport is located just 40 km away.
