Life has become monotonous. A break and that too at a beach will refresh and detox you no end. A busy beach bustling with people may not be a good idea. Something isolated yet near civilization is a location is what our soul searches. This combination can best be experienced at some of the amazing beaches on the Konkan coast.
The Konkan coast runs some 700kms along the Arabian Sea; beginning from south Mumbai along Goa and ending at the Goa Karnataka border. There are numerous beaches here and some of them are a big favorite of the weekend crowds from Mumbai, Pune and Goa. These include Alibaug beach, Ganpatipule beach, and Tarkali beach.
Apart from the above beaches, there are others – remote and unexplored waiting to be discovered by the multitude. Most of them are safe for swimming. Some of them are best for taking morning and evening walks or just lazing in the sun. From these beach fronts, you can also go down to a nearby village and taste the special Konakan cuisine and/or stay back at a cozy resort or homestay. Here goes the list of a few:
1. Anjarle beach
This beach is in the Ratnagiri District just 20 kms from Dapoli. It is isolated and sometimes you can have the beach all for yourself. Enjoy long walks on this here enjoying the breeze of gently swaying palm fronds and coconut trees. You can also visit the port and a famous Ganesha temple nearby.
2. Harihareshwar beach
This beach on the foothills of the Sahayadri is just beside a holy Shiva temple. It is here that the river Savitri river enters the Sea. The beach is divided by the temple into two parts, one where the pilgrim take a holy dip and another near the MTDC resort.
3. Velneshwar beach
This beach is 80 kms away from the city of Ratnagir and about 300 kms from Mumbai. It has Guhagar beach on one side and Ganpatipule beach on another. This beach is yet to be discovered by the maddening crowd and so you can enjoy your own company or loved ones here.
You can also visit the 1700 old Shiva temple very near the beach.
4. Guhagar beach
The nearest railhead to reach this beach is Chiplun. It falls between the Vasisthi river and Jigad creek. It is one of the beaches on the Konkan where the sand is white in color.
Shop for Alphonso mangoes, betel nuts, coconut and coir items in the nearby villages.
5. Awas beach
This is among the safest beaches on the Konkan coast. The scenery is out of this world what with a lot of hills beautiful flora and fauna around. The only sounds on this one-off beach are the splashing waves and whistling vegetation on the shores.
6. Sasawne beach
Sasawne is one of the least explored Konkan coast beaches on the lying on the Mumbai Goa highway. It falls under the Raigad District jurisdiction, Maharashtra. Those privies to the whereabouts of this beach come in the evenings to enjoy the most amazing sunsets ever witnessed on a beach!
7. Velas Beach
Velas beach is the location for the Velas Turtle festival, held in March. You can also taste the amazing coastal meal spread in this beach easily accessible from Pune.
8. Shrivardhan Beach
Shrivardhan Beach is one of the Cleanest of all beaches in Konkan. Maintained by the local government it has beautiful Promenade and seats where even the elderly can rest. Swimming is possible in low tide. Access to the beach is possible on payment of a nominal fee, the proceeds of which go to maintenance of this spotless beach

- Kondura beach – near Vengurla, place for seabird watching
- Nivati beach – near Vengurla
- Hedvi Beach – Near Chiplun, a location for Brahmanghal gorge
- Mithbav Beach – Near Devgad, the holy Gajbadevi temple is nearby
- Tondavali beach – near Malvan, visit the Kalaval creek nearby
- Khavane Beach – near Vengurla, you view of large coconut tree plantations here
- Kelshi Beach – near Dapoli, look-out for the natural sand-dunes here
- Kerlai beach – near Korlai , two places to see here are Korlai fort and lighthouse
Most of these beaches are very near important cities like Mumbai and Pune, hence easily reached during weekends.
So whenever you are bogged down by work, take a break and refill your energy cylinders by visiting these serene, cool, relaxing beaches on the Konkan coast.
