The Eravikulam National Park is a wildlife sanctuary that is situated in the Western Ghats in the Idukki district of Kerala. It is one of the first national parks in Kerala. It is interesting to note that the Eravikulam National Park is run by the Department of Forests and Wildlife in Kerala. It is also worthwhile to note that Eravikulam National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Eravikulam National Park : Geographic Details

The main body of the park comprises of a high rolling plateau that has an elevation of about 2000 meters. This is a great spot from where you can opt for Eravikulam National Park Safari. The terrain also comprises of high altitude grasslands. Many perennial streams run through this national park, and it also enhances the beauty of this park.

An ideal place to witness rich biodiversity

Many tourists call the Eravikulam National Park in the Idukki district as a perfect place to see biodiversity at its very best. The visitors are usually taken to Rajamalai in forest department vehicles for Eravikulam National Park Safari. This National Park is unique in its stature as it is a sanctuary to the endangered mountain goat of India also known as the Nilgiri Tahr. On the other hand, one can witness other varieties of flora and fauna that also makes it an ideal spot to conduct safaris.

How to reach ?

There are numerous ways with the help of which a traveler can reach the Eravikulam National Park. By air, Cochin International Airport is the nearest airport and is situated 150 kilometers away from the Eravikulam National Park. On the other hand, the Aluva Railway Station is the nearest railway station that is located just 4 kilometers away from the national park. One can also travel this 4-kilometer road through various government vehicles. Quite interestingly, the park is well connected to numerous major towns in the Idukki district of Kerala.

The Eravikulam National Park Safari

It is interesting to note that Rajamalai is the only region in the park that is allowed for tourists to visit. The main attraction of this park is the Nilgiri Tahr that is an endangered species. The tourists have to park their vehicles outside the park and have to take a ride on the vehicles of the government officials. It is interesting to note that as this region promises the sighting of the Nilgiri Tahr, the officials take extra precautions to avoid harm being done to these endangered species of Nilgiri Tahr.

The dominant flora

It is worthwhile to note that this National Park has a wide variety of flora that always appeals to the senses of a tourist. It is blessed with plenty of natural covers, and in the local dialect, they are known as the Shola Forests. One can find a variety of medicinal plants that includes Drosera and Peltata. There are other types of plant that makes the surroundings of this national park truly tranquil and mystic.

It is one of those wildlife sanctuaries that is resplendent with a rich variety of flora and fauna. All these aspects augur for a perfect trip of a wildlife safari. The period between September-December is known as the best time to visit this national park.
