The Mystifying River Zanskar Freezes During Winters

Leh – Ladakh is like heaven for travel enthusiasts, and specifically, if we talk about its Zanskar region then it is no less than a holy grail.  During the summers, travelers from all across the country, raft through the speeding waters of the river Zanskar. And when it comes to the winters, adventure fanatics walk over the freezing layer of the river Zanskar that inexplicably calms down during this season.


Frozen River Zanskar Is The Only Route To Reach The Zanskar Valley

The Zanskar river is truly mysterious, during the winters the rivers freezes up into sheets of ice. One thing to note is that to reach the Zanskar Valley this is the one and only available route, as all the other high rising passes are covered with snow. This frozen river pass is the only way for the locals to reach their homes in the Zanskar valley. They travel for days on the sheets of ice (also called the white chadar) over the solid river Zanskar.

While this route is inevitable for the locals, it has become a point of attractions for trekkers and adventurists globally. Isn’t the Chadar Trek totally awesome? Well, I haven’t been there yet, but know many who have. Trust me people who have been on this trek have endless numbers of stories to share. Well, this trek is on my bucket list, well I want to be on this incredible trek to make my own tales.

One point to note is that there is a road which is under construction from Chilling to Padum. Once the construction of this road is complete, the Chadar trek would lose it real charm. So, make sure you make it before the urbanization overtakes it.
