Bagore Ki Haveli, The Picturesque Palace In Udaipur

Udaipur is known as the ‘City of Lakes‘ in India. The royal, majestic city is already a popular tourist destination. While there are a lot of things you can’t miss, Bagore ki Haveli is one stunning piece of architecture you have to check out.

Udaipur was created around artificial lakes created by an Indian ruler. Before the British invaded, India was a land of rich nobles and royalty. They lived in magnificent houses, palaces rather, that were built over acres of land. Indian architecture was advanced and the princes tried to outdo each other by making mansions bigger than their neighbors. Udaipur thus became home to Rajput palaces that became the talk of the country. Till date they remain pristine, awe-inspiring and entice tourists from all over the world. It isn’t surprising that Udaipur has become a popular tourist destination in India and the world. It is also popular as a wedding venue. The wedding of industrial baron Mukesh Ambani’s daughter Isha Ambani took place in Udaipur in December 2018. Celebrities, businessmen, actors and friends flew from all over to attend the event. Musical superstar Beyonce performed at a private party held to celebrate the nuptials.

Located in a desert, Udaipur has a hot climate through the year. Winter is when it gets cool at nights but days remain arid and warm. If you’re looking to visit the ideal time would be between November to February. Yet you will find it crowded through the year because it is so popular and tourist friendly. Udaipur is also one of the Smart Cities to be promoted and supported by the Indian Government. There are many attractions and interesting things to do and see in Udaipur. Here’s are some you must absolutely do.

The Jag Mandir Palace is situated on an island in Lake Pichola and it is mind blowing. Used as a summer palace, the intricate architecture and murals take your breath away. Lake Pichola itself is an artificial lake that you must visit. The lake has been smartly created keeping the islands and the structures on it in mind. You can take a boat or ferry ride and view the entire lake which has several famous hotels and properties on its banks. Jagdish Temple is a very famous and respected temple in the city with pristine white architecture that speaks of Rajput style and culture. These are the popular and known places but if you want to do something offbeat, try the Bagore ki Haveli. Haveli is a traditional Indian mansion or palace built in the 17th or 18th century by royalty or local rulers.

Bagore ki Haveli was built in the 18th century by the Prime Minister of Mewar. After Independence, the haveli fell into decline and it was only in 1986 that they started restoration work on the structure. The mansion has over a 100 rooms, courtyards, balconies, terraces and passages/corridors. Each area or room bears a typical Rajput or Rajasthani style including glass or mirror work. The rooms feature embellishment, intricate murals, artwork and frescoes. There are beautifully painted frescoes depicting history and myths of local culture. Tourists and visitors can view items such as jewelry boxes, furniture, trinkets on display that go back to ancient times. Currently it is a museum that preserves and restores local artifacts and crafts. Curators, historians and experts were consulted to ensure they do justice to the museum and the Haveli. They hold live performances of song, dance and music promoting local artisans and artists. It is a sight to behold on cool winter evenings as the twinkly lights and the palace provide a mesmerizing backdrop to a ceremony of song and dance.
