1. Putulbaari

The other name for this place is House of dolls. You must be wondering that how come a place of dolls is a haunted place right? Well, the story behind this place is that people say that many sex workers were abused by landlords during the British rule in India and it is the spirit of these women which haunts the place till date. People who live nearby say that they hear a burst of very weird laughter from the upper floor of the house. The story behind this particular place may be true or not but if even looking at the building gives you a very eerie feeling. A few people live on the lower floor of this building; however, nobody is allowed to go to the top floor even during the broad daylight.

2. National Library

Not many people know this but this library was the residence of the Governor during the British period. It is believed that the wife of the Governor, Lady Metcalfe suffered from OCD or commonly known as obsessive cleaning disorder. She hated if things were out of order and till date it is said that if you keep things out of order in this library then you would feel as if somebody is watching you. It is believed that this Lady Metcalfe is the women whose ghost haunts this place. One more interesting fact is that in 2010, the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) found a secret chamber and it is said that it was used as a torture chamber during the British rule. With all these rumours, it makes it one of the most haunting places in Kolkata.


3. Rabindra Sarobar Metro Station

I am sure that you must have heard about this particular spot because more than 40% of the suicide attempts in Kolkata happens at this station. The electricity running through the railway lines for the functioning of metro trains has been used by the people to commit suicides. There have been instances where the drivers have stopped the train the middle of the tunnel because they felt that they have seen a strange shadow passing through the tracks. Many people also say that they have seen white shadows at the station; Nevertheless, people still feel scared to take the last metro station here.

4. South Park Street Cemetry

Visiting the graveyard already gives you a bad feeling. Now, what if I tell you to visit a graveyard which is considered to be haunted, will you still dare to visit such a place? South Park Street Cemetry happens to be one of the most haunted places in Kolkata. It houses more than 1800 graves and was opened way back in 1767 so that makes this graveyard over 250 years old. It is said that a group of tourists visited this place and they had recorded a video here; they noticed a white figure and after noticing this one particular person of the group got an asthma attack even though he didn’t have any past medical history of asthma. Ever since this incident, this place is considered to be haunted.

5. Writer’s Building

A few years back a new writer building has been opened. The one I am talking about is the old writer’s building located at BBD Bag. It is said that in this building there are a few rooms which haven’t been opened for decades and these rooms are considered to be haunted. The guards have said that they have heard strange laughs in the night. Even the officers who work here don’t stay here after sunset or do night shifts. Investigations have been made but nothing relevant was reported to explain these strange things.

6. Hasting’s House

As the name suggests this place was the residence of a particular general during the British rule of India. The governor’s name was William Hastings and today it serves as a college for women which is affiliated to Calcutta University. The staff and a few hostel girls have reported that they have seen a British man entering the campus and have heard footsteps of a horse. Another legend behind this place is that a few years ago a boy had an untimely death in the ground near this house while playing football. It is said the ghost of this boy haunts this place till date.

7. Kolkata Dock

The last place that I would like to talk about in this article of 7 Haunted places in Kolkata is the Kolkata Dock. It is located in Khidirpur area of Kolkata. This particular dock was constructed by Nawab Wajib Ali. The Nawab used to trade with the East India Company and the British cheated him and dumped him. It is said that the ghost of this particular nawab haunts this place who is still trying to take revenge from the British.
