Darjeeling is located in the state of West Bengal and is widely known for its tea industry because without any doubt they produce the best tea in the world. It is located near the lower Himalayas, which is better known as the Mahabharat range. Whenever people talk about Darjeeling, I do not know why they suffer from a misconception that Darjeeling does not has anything apart from the Kanchenjunga peaks and some breathtaking sights. I cannot deny the fact that Darjeeling is not small; yes the town is small and confined but within the 3,000 square kilometers of Darjeeling, you would be getting an experience of a lifetime; which you would never be able to forget in your life. You could reach the places that I would be mentioning below via walking but for some of them you would need a vehicle. You may also visit them on foot but you should remember walking a straight road is a different thing and walking an elevated hill is a different case. Walking up an elevated hill requires a lot of stamina and at the same time, it is very exhausting. 1. Darjeeling Himalayan Railway

The first place to make it to the list of 10 best places to visit in Darjeeling is DHR, Darjeeling Himalayan Railway which is also known as the toy train. It is a narrow gauge rail which runs between Darjeeling and Jalpaiguri and was built in between 1879-1881. It is a world heritage site declared by UNESCO in 1999 making Darjeeling Himalayan Railway the second railway in the world to receive such an hour after Semmering Railway which is situated in Austria. The headquarters of the railway is situated in the town of Kurseong and the railway is around 78 km long.

2. Singalila National Park


This place is situated 2134 meters above sea level which is among the highest regions of West Bengal. If you are into trekking activities, then Singalila National Park is a must visit for you. The park is also famous for its peaks and amazing panoramic views. Red Panda, Leopard, Black Bear, Clouded Leopard, Tigers, Leopard Cat, Serow, Barking Deer, Wild Board, Yellow throated Marten, Pangolin, Takin are among the animals which you may see at the national park. Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park is famous for its Red Panda and Snow Leopard breeding program and you can spot many rare and endangered species in the zoo like Red Pandas, Snow Leopards, Tibetan Wolf, Himalayan Salamanders, Siberian tigers and Himalayan mountain goat.

4. Tiger Hill

When I am talking about the best places to visit in Darjeeling; Tiger Hill definitely comes onto my mind. It is one of the most famous peaks in Darjeeling and could be reached by foot or jeep(according to the your will); on the road to this particular hill you would be coming across the oldest tea plantations in Darjeeling and this is a very popular destination for trekking activities. If you enjoy sightseeing then you defiantly need to visit this place because it offers mind boggling views of the Kanchenjunga and the Mount Everest. All these factors have made Tiger Hill attain the 4th position in the list of 10 best places to visit in Darjeeling.

5. Observatory Hill

Like the name suggests this is one of the best spots in Darjeeling to observe the amazing views of the mountains and it also has a temple at the summit which is called the Mahakal Temple. It is located at the Mall area and you could find the Mall Road at the bottom. As you would be walking down the Mall road, you would notice the steep hill rising on one side. It is not that high and should take you 20 minutes of uphill walk to reach to the top. When you take the Mall road from the right side of Chowrasta Mall, in about 100 yards away from you; you will find stairs which leads towards the Observatory Hill and the Mahakal Temple. 6. Batasia Loop

The sixth place to make it to the list of 10 best places to visit in Darjeeling is Batasia loop. It can be visited by you when the famous Toy Train makes its way across a looped track which transverses through some beautiful parks. When you take the toy train to Batasia loop you would witness a 360 degree view of Darjeeling; this place is famous for having a Gorkha war memorial and the loop covers an area of over 50,000 square feet which is divided into tunnels, hillocks and landscaped parks. There is a local crafts market nearby which you can think of visiting; you can get good local stuff at a very economical price.

7. Happy Valley Tea Estate

Happy Valley Tea Estate is situated at an elevation of 2,100 meters above sea level and is spread across an area of 437 acres. It is a major tourist attraction and helps Darjeeling earn a lot of foreign exchange; it has the highest tea factory in the world and was established by a Englishman in 1854 which was taken over by a Indian aristocracy from Hooghly. 8. Joey’s Pub

The 8th place to make it to the list of 10 best places to visit in Darjeeling is Joey’s Pub. I know what you must be thinking, why would I visit a pub when I visit Darjeeling. Well, Joey’s pub isn’t like the other traditional pubs; it is a British style pub which was built in 1948 and is one of the major tourist attractions in Darjeeling. I would recommend you to visit this place in the evening after you are done with your sightseeing. Joey’s pub has mid priced drinks which could be enjoyed with the snacks they offer along with some light classic rock and blues playing in the background.

9. Japanese Peace Pagoda

Japanese Peace Pagoda was built during 1885-1995 by Nichidatsu Fuji who was a Japanese Buddhist monk. Japanese Peace Pagoda is a part of 30 such structures which have been built at various places across the world. It is a very beautiful white structure with golden colored sculptures.
